Bali Provincial Government Partners with Content Creators to Educate on Conservation Areas

The Bali Provincial Government has chosen to partner with content creators to educate tourists regarding the rules of visiting conservation areas. This approach has been adopted because conventional socialisation methods, such as the distribution of brochures, are deemed ineffective.

The Head of the Bali Marine and Fisheries Office, Putu Sumardiana, stated that education via social media is expected to increase tourist awareness in preserving the marine ecosystem. “Up until now, I have created brochures and held socialisation events, but it does not seem to have been effective. Hopefully, through viral content, public awareness will grow,” said Sumardiana on Tuesday (1/9/2026).

Sumardiana explained that the socialisation targets conservation points such as Nusa Penida and Tulamben. Content creators will not only produce content to introduce the beauty of these areas but will also communicate the limitations on activities permitted for tourists.

“In the future, content creators will convey to the wider public—including local communities and foreign tourists—that Bali possesses several conservation area points,” he revealed.

He provided an example, noting that tourists who have paid retribution fees are not permitted to engage in any activity they wish within the conservation areas. “If we go swimming, just because we have paid the retribution fee, it does not mean we are free to do anything in the conservation area. That is not the concept,” Sumardiana explained.

Therefore, he continued, content creators will play a role in correcting misinformation circulating in the public, including information regarding the use of retribution funds.

Currently, the Tulamben area is still in the stage of approach and massive socialisation regarding retribution. Meanwhile, in Nusa Penida, it has been established that international tourists are charged Rp 100,000 and domestic tourists Rp 10,000.

“My hope is that through socialisation activities via social media and content creators, the wider public will know and understand their rights and obligations, particularly when conducting water-based tourism activities, such as snorkelling or diving,” concluded Sumardiana.
