Bali Prison Authority Proposes 2,600 Sentence Remissions for Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr
Bali’s Regional Prison Authority (Kanwil Ditjenpas) has submitted a proposal to grant sentence remissions to approximately 2,600 prisoners during the Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr celebrations, according to Decky Nurmansyah, Head of the Regional Directorate, speaking in Denpasar on Monday.
The proposal involves reducing sentences for roughly 1,000 Hindu inmates observing Nyepi, whilst approximately 1,600 Muslim prisoners are expected to receive remissions during the Eid al-Fitr festivities across Bali.
Nurmansyah clarified that the remission proposal is subject to change based on the behaviour of inmates whilst in correctional facilities or detention centres. “If a prisoner has been recommended for remission but commits an infraction two days before the decree is issued, the remission may be reviewed and revoked,” he explained. He urged all inmates to maintain good conduct to ensure their remissions are approved as per the formal decision.
The length of remissions varies between 15 days and two months, depending on evaluations of inmate behaviour and sentences already served. Nurmansyah highlighted that the remission process is conducted transparently through the Corrections Database System (SDP) and is entirely free of charge.
Bali operates 11 corrections units including six prisons, four detention centres, and one juvenile facility. Two facilities—Kerobokan Class II-A Prison in Badung Regency and Bangli Narcotics Class II-A Prison—are identified as significantly overcrowded.
The remission initiative is intended to provide motivation for all prisoners in Bali to continue participating in rehabilitation programmes, maintain exemplary behaviour, and preserve orderly conditions within correctional and detention facilities. The formal remission decrees for both Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr are scheduled to be issued following Eid prayers, with distribution in the Denpasar area to be centralised at Kerobokan Class II-A Prison.
