Bali on Alert for Extreme Weather: Heavy Rain and Strong Winds in Gianyar, Karangasem, and Badung
Residents across several regions in Bali have been urged to heighten vigilance following an extreme weather warning issued by the BMKG Denpasar Regional Office. Three regencies on the island are forecast to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with strong winds expected to persist until the end of May 2026.
According to the weather forecast data, the heavy rain is expected from Tuesday (26 May) until Wednesday (27 May) at 08:00 WITA. In response, BMKG has declared a ‘Waspada’ (Caution) status for affected areas to mitigate hydro-meteorological impacts such as flooding and landslides.
BMKG Denpasar Regional Office forecaster Wulan Wandarana stated that the threat of strong winds is not short-lived. Weather models predict the phenomenon will continue from 27-28 May, potentially extending to 29 May.
‘The strong wind threat is expected to persist in four regencies: Badung, Klungkung, Karangasem, and Denpasar City, excluding Buleleng Regency,’ Wulan explained.
The adverse weather conditions are already manifesting on the ground. In Badung Regency, heavy rain since Monday (25 May) evening to Tuesday (26 May) morning has significantly increased water levels in several irrigation channels and small rivers.
Badung Regency’s Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported incidents due to the extreme weather. Ketut Murdika, Head of Emergency and Logistics at Badung BPBD, confirmed a fallen tree in Abiansemal District.
‘Yes, there are reports of fallen trees,’ Ketut Murdika confirmed briefly, adding that rapid response teams are on standby.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant, especially when outdoors, avoiding sheltering under large trees or billboards, and regularly monitoring official weather updates via BMKG channels.
BMKG Denpasar has warned of potential waves up to 4 metres in Southern Bali waters and the Badung Strait from 8-11 May 2026.
Residents, particularly fishermen and maritime tourism operators, are urged to exercise caution as sea waves in Bali waters reach 2.5 metres.
Cahyo Nugroho, Chief of BMKG Denpasar Regional Office, stated that the forecast poses risks to maritime safety.
Meanwhile, strong wind warnings for the same day are likely to affect two regencies: Bangli and Badung.
