Bali International Hospital Launches Robotic Surgery in First Year of Operations

Bali International Hospital (BIH) in the Sanur Health Special Economic Zone (KEK) has officially launched robotic gastrointestinal surgery technology in its first year of operations. President Director & CEO of Bali International Hospital, Dr. Noel Yeo, stated in Denpasar on Tuesday that the achievement was a remarkable milestone for such a young institution. Following the hospital’s official inauguration by President Prabowo Subianto on 25 June 2025, the facility performed its first robotic gastrointestinal surgery in Bali and Eastern Indonesia on Monday, 29 June, involving a gallbladder removal. Dr. Yeo further announced that the hospital had subsequently achieved another first by successfully performing a combined robotic-assisted procedure to remove an adrenal tumour and a gallbladder, a combination he claimed had never been performed before in Indonesia. He emphasised that the health ecosystem in Indonesia is becoming increasingly advanced, with the goal of making Bali International Hospital a preferred destination for Indonesians, reducing the need to seek treatment in Malaysia or Singapore. Dr. I Made Mulyawan, a Digestive Surgeon at BIH KEK Sanur, added that robotic surgery, already well-established in developed countries, offers greater precision, is minimally invasive, and allows for shorter recovery times. The technology, demonstrated using the Edge® MP1000 Multi-port Endoscopic Robotic Surgical System, allows surgeons to control instruments from a console rather than standing directly over the patient. Dr. Mulyawan noted that the enhanced precision leads to better outcomes and can reduce operation times to under an hour for various procedures, including abdominal, thoracic, urological, and gynaecological surgeries. Following the successful operations on elderly patients from Bali and Surabaya, the hospital plans to offer this modern technology to all patients with similar cases to increase the success rate of treatments.
