Bali Governor seeks end to Suwung-like landfills by 2027
“Starting in 2027, the Suwung Landfill model should no longer exist in other districts. The BKK (special financial assistance) provided in 2027 will be intended for waste management in each region,” he said at the Bali Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) Plenary Session on Wednesday.
According to him, the BKK will focus on resolving waste management issues, adding that those who fail to take responsibility will not receive assistance.
He made the statement as the issue at the Suwung Landfill has become a major concern, where the former head of Bali’s Environment Agency, Made Teja, was prosecuted for failing to manage the waste.
“The Head of the Bali Environment Agency has been named a suspect in the management of the Suwung Landfill because the leachate is polluting the sea and water sources, threatening public health. Therefore, this must be ended; there is no other option,” Koster pointed out.
The Suwung Landfill, which accommodates waste from Denpasar and Badung, will impose restrictions starting March 31, 2026, only receiving inorganic and residual waste, before it completely closes on August 1.
Therefore, the Bali Provincial Government, along with the Denpasar City Government and the Badung District Government, are working on managing organic waste, including efforts to process it at its source with community support.
To prevent further waste accumulation in Bali, similar to the Suwung Landfill, the Bali Provincial Government, with the assistance of the central government, will introduce waste-to-energy (PSEL) technology.
The PSEL will be built on 6 hectares of land owned by PT Pelindo in South Denpasar.
“The construction of the PSEL has begun, and the groundbreaking ceremony is planned by the end of June 2026,” the governor informed.
He explained that the PSEL project will run for 1.5 years, processing a minimum of 1,200 tons of waste per day. This is expected to eliminate waste buildup and prevent similar accumulation issues in other districts and cities.
