Denpasar (ANTARA) - The Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) in Bali Province has granted remission for the sacred day of Nyepi to 1,089 inmates on the Island of the Gods. “Of that number, two individuals were immediately released,” said the Head of the Bali Ditjenpas Regional Office, Decky Nurmansyah, in Denpasar, Bali, on Friday. According to him, the amount of sentence reduction varies from 15 days to a maximum of two months. The remission granted is calculated based on Presidential Decree No. 174 of 1999 on remission as well as the mechanism for granting remission under the Correctional Services Law No. 22 of 2022. Decky detailed that the 1,089 beneficiaries consist of 1,083 Indonesian national (WNI) inmates and six foreign national (WNA) inmates. Furthermore, among the 1,089 individuals, six are juvenile wards and 1,083 are adult inmates. The Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections comprises 11 Technical Implementation Units (UPT), including six correctional institutions (lapas), four state detention centres (rutan), and one Special Child Development Institution. Decky assured that the granting of special remission for the sacred day of Nyepi 2026 fulfils the rights of inmates, serves as a form of appreciation for those who have met the requirements and behaved well, and aims to enhance nationalistic spirit as well as awareness of nationhood and statehood. Based on records from the Bali Ditjenpas Regional Office as of 18 March 2026, the number of wards on the Island of the Gods reaches 4,654 individuals, of whom 3,623 are inmates and 1,031 are detainees.
