Bali Council Urges Traditional Villages to Help Curb Rising Crime
The Bali Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) has urged traditional villages to participate in maintaining security and order in their respective areas, citing a rise in criminality on the island. The call was made by the Chairperson of Commission I of the Bali DPRD, I Nyoman Budiutama, during a Hearing Meeting (RDP) with the Bali Regional Police, Immigration, Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP), the Traditional Village Council, and other law enforcement officials at the DPRD Bali office on Monday (13/7/2026).
“We know that maintaining security and order is not solely the absolute responsibility of the police; there needs to be clear cooperation with each stakeholder in this matter,” Budiutama stated. “From the grassroots level, involving the pecalang in each traditional village, and we also request that the Sipandu Beradat programme continues to be implemented properly.”
Budiutama added that this approach would help maintain order and security at both the traditional village and general levels. He requested that pecalang assist in addressing any issues that arise, including managing order during religious ceremonies. He asked pecalang to coordinate with local police to ensure that road closures during religious events do not disrupt other road users. This statement also responded to recent social media buzz regarding traffic diversions during the Ngerebong ceremony in Kesiman.
“There is no such thing as pecalang completely closing roads, because they have already received training from the police,” Budiutama clarified. The council also pushed for the local government to prepare for the procurement of CCTV monitoring systems. Budiutama said he would immediately coordinate with the government on this matter. “The outcome is that we work together to minimise criminality through cooperation with relevant parties, both within the regional government and down to the traditional village level,” the PDIP politician explained.
