Bali Conservation Agency Receives 16 Long-Tailed Monkeys from Public

The Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA Bali) has received the surrender of 16 long-tailed monkeys since 2025. Long-tailed monkeys are listed under CITES Appendix II, meaning they are not endangered but require strict controls to prevent overexploitation. BKSDA Bali Head Ratna Hendratmoko revealed that the handover of the dozen monkeys by residents occurred after the issuance of Bali Governor Circular Letter Number 19 of 2025. According to him, the public is beginning to realise that such wild animals should not be kept without a permit nor exploited for entertainment, such as performing monkey shows. "Long-tailed monkeys are not a protected species, but they are listed under CITES Appendix II. Their trade requires a permit from BKSDA Bali, and they are categorised as wild animals," said Moko in Denpasar on Monday. Moko encouraged the values of local wisdom held by Balinese society to serve as a guiding principle for ensuring animal welfare. He argued that Bali, as a tourism destination, should not be seen displaying the exploitation of animals. "Bali must be able to adapt to patterns of animal use that better demonstrate animal welfare. The Governor understands this very well because there has been a great deal of criticism regarding animal welfare in Bali, one example being the long-tailed monkeys," Moko explained. According to Moko, many more residents wish to surrender these animals for rehabilitation at BKSDA. He reminded residents who still wish to keep wild animals to complete the necessary permits. "We will facilitate a sort of sworn statement ensuring they do not exhibit the animal to the public and that they attend to its enclosure, feed, and health. There is even a requirement to show proof of rabies vaccination," said Moko.
