Balanced news coverage needed
From Pos Kota
Stories about the defunct Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) have received intense coverage in the mass media, particularly television, lately.
For the purpose of revealing facts about PKI's September 30, 1965 movement to set the record straight, the media have exposed various opinions and reports around the incident as well as interviews with statements opposed to the New Order version of history.
Books and documentaries about the discovery of mass graves of PKI members slain by security forces were also shown, along with comments by relatives of the victims and surviving ex-PKI members.
Professionally speaking, the media, especially television, should also give balanced coverage by presenting data or stories about victims of PKI atrocities in the past, in which civilians also died at the hands of communists.
