BAKTI Infrastructure Eases Internet Access for East Flores Residents

The telecommunication infrastructure built by the Telecommunication and Information Accessibility Agency (BAKTI) of the Ministry of Communication and Digital in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, has made it easier for residents to access telecommunication and internet services. BAKTI has constructed six Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) and provided 262 internet access points in government facilities, villages, schools, and health facilities in the East Flores region.

Speaking at the BAKTI Media Connect 2026 event in Jakarta on Wednesday, Head of the East Flores Communication and Informatics Office Silvester Suban Toa Kabelen said that before BAKTI built the telecommunication infrastructure, residents and government officials had to travel long distances to get a signal. “Our community, or friends at schools, even health facilities, community health centres, and sub-health centres, had to cover kilometres of distance to find a place with a signal so they could access information, submit reports, and deliver data,” he said. “Sometimes they had to climb trees, because there was no signal below, so they had to climb trees,” he added.

He conveyed that internet access has now become a necessity, as digital systems are used in learning activities, administration, and assessments in education. However, bandwidth limitations pose a problem when all students in a school need to access the examination system simultaneously. Konradus noted that constraints can also arise during assessments, when around 450 students and 50 teachers and supervisors at the school use the network almost at the same time. “I come with great hope that there will be an increase in capacity. The infrastructure is already in the field, but there are things that need to be fixed so it can be maximised,” said Konradus. The hope is that improved telecommunication services and internet access in schools can optimise teaching and learning activities as well as educational evaluations in schools across East Flores.
