BAKTI: Education sector to be largest SATRIA 1 beneficiary in 2026

The Telecommunications and Information Accessibility Agency of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (BAKTI Kemkomdigi) has stated that in 2026, the utilisation of the Republic of Indonesia Satellite (SATRIA 1) will predominantly serve the education sector. Out of 31,803 locations provided with connectivity by SATRIA 1, BAKTI Kemkomdigi recorded that as of 5 June 2026, a total of 21,718 locations, or 68.16 percent of access service points, originate from the education sector. “This demonstrates that from the outset, education has indeed been the primary priority for utilising SATRIA 1’s capacity, because connectivity is the foundation for equalising the quality of educational services, especially in underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions,” said BAKTI Kemkomdigi President Director Fadhillah Mathar on Thursday. Beyond providing connectivity services, BAKTI is also actively building education through digital literacy, reinforcing its commitment to educating the nation’s children via the education sector. Fadhillah, familiarly known as Indah, stated that the digital literacy initiatives carried out by BAKTI are naturally aligned with the broader framework of Kemkomdigi’s digital literacy programme, but with a more specific focus on targeting vulnerable groups in 3T areas, such as students, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), farmers, and fishermen. Discussing its achievements, Indah noted that throughout 2025, BAKTI successfully delivered digital literacy to 18 community groups with a total of 21,160 participants, exceeding the initial target of 15 groups. Moving forward, BAKTI is committed to synergising and actively coordinating with Kemkomdigi so that every programme can be precisely targeted. “In digital literacy programmes, BAKTI has strong synergy and coordination within the broader framework of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs,” Indah said. Besides the education sector, SATRIA 1 also serves other public service facilities. The second largest number of points served by this first state-owned satellite are government offices, with total services reaching 6,353 locations, or 19.94 percent. The remaining 399 points are services available for the tourism, business services, and public transport sectors. SATRIA 1 was launched in 2023 and began operations in 2024. It is the satellite with the largest capacity in Asia, boasting a total transmission capacity of 150 Gbps and utilising very high-throughput satellite (VHTS) technology in the Ka-Band frequency. SATRIA 1 is a government and business entity cooperation (KPBU) project, with a total investment of approximately Rp6.42 trillion under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme. SATRIA 1’s supporting infrastructure is equipped with 11 gateways spread across Batam, Pontianak, Banjarmasin, Cikarang, Manado, Ambon, Kupang, Manokwari, Timika, Jayapura, and Tarakan. These gateways function as the main link between the satellite and the national internet network.
