The government has urged students and all sections of society planning to express their views in public on Wednesday (28 October) to maintain order, security and a peaceful atmosphere.

Head of the Indonesian Government Communications Agency (Bakom), Syahganda Nainggolan, stressed that the government respects every citizen’s right, including that of students, to express opinions in public in accordance with the laws and regulations.

“The government urges all students and members of the public planning to express their views at the demonstration on 28 October 2026 to conduct it in an orderly, safe and peaceful manner,” Syahganda said in a statement on Wednesday (28 October).

He said the expression of public views was an important part of democratic life. Accordingly, space for people to express their opinions should be protected collectively so that it can take place constructively and benefit the nation and state.

However, Syahganda reminded all participants to act responsibly, avoid being easily provoked and refrain from anarchic actions that could harm the public.

He also emphasised the importance of protecting public facilities so that the activities and interests of the wider community are not disrupted.

“The government will remain open to public feedback, and this interaction is a positive space that should be protected collectively,” he said.

Syahganda said differences of opinion and criticism were normal in a democracy.

He therefore hoped that views expressed peacefully and responsibly would form part of healthy communication between the public and the government.

“The expression of public views should continue to prioritise peaceful means, deliberation and dialogue, rather than provocation or violence,” he said.

As well as urging the public to maintain order, Syahganda asked all parties, including security personnel, to adopt a persuasive and humane approach during the demonstrations.

He said this approach was important to maintaining a stable situation while respecting the public’s right to express opinions.

The government also reminded the public to be more discerning when receiving and sharing information, particularly amid circumstances that could generate various claims in the public sphere.

“Finally, the public is urged not to spread hoaxes or information that could inflame the situation,” Syahganda concluded.
