Bakery employee dies in fire

TANGERANG (JP): A bakery shop employee in Duta Garden housing complex here was killed when fire engulfed the shop on Tuesday night.

Witnesses said Gunawan, 23, was trapped when the fire broke out at about 7:30 p.m. in the building in Benda district.

He was unable to escape because the blaze quickly spread through the building. Burns covered his entire body.

Tangerang Fire Department deployed two fire engines several minutes later, but the shop was razed.

The source of the fire remains unknown. Material losses have yet to be calculated but are believed to reach into the millions of rupiah.

Gunawan's body was taken to Tangerang General Hospital for autopsy.

"Identification of the body was difficult because of the burns," hospital morgue employee Radi said.

Tangerang Police detectives chief Capt. Krisnadi said the cause of the fire was still under investigation. (41/jun)
