Bahlil Warns Wealthy Citizens Against Using Subsidised Fuel

The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, has reminded affluent members of the public not to use subsidised fuel (BBM). He stated that fuel subsidies should be reserved for those who are rightfully entitled to receive them.

Bahlil urged those in middle-to-upper economic conditions, particularly those owning vehicles that reflect adequate economic status, to use non-subsidised fuel.

“I am appealing to my fellow citizens, and I will continue to do so. Those who are capable, those with good incomes, the middle-to-upper class, with nice cars—please do not use subsidised fuel,” said Bahlil following the MKI Electricity Connect 2026 event on Tuesday (22/09/2026).

He noted that the use of subsidised fuel by wealthy individuals can shift the subsidy allocation away from those who truly need it. Therefore, he called for the public to have the awareness not to take away the rights of those who depend on government subsidies.

“Should we not feel ashamed towards our fellow citizens who are meant to receive fuel subsidies, but find their quota taken by those who are capable? It does not end there,” he added.

On the other hand, Bahlil emphasised that the government has ensured that the price of subsidised fuel will not increase until the end of the year. In addition to maintaining prices, the government is also ensuring that the national fuel stock remains secure.

“The most important thing right now is that the government ensures our fuel reserves are at the minimum standard of 18 to 21 days,” he said.
