Bahlil Strongly Reprimands Luxury Car Owners Using Subsidised Fuel
The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, has highlighted the ongoing use of subsidised fuel by affluent members of society. Bahlil specifically addressed owners of luxury vehicles who continue to utilise subsidised petrol.
According to Bahlability, those who are economically capable should allow those in genuine need to access these subsidies. “My advice as an Indonesian citizen to my brothers and sisters who are capable—and I apologise, those whose cars are BMWs or high-end vehicles—please, let us use our hearts,” Bahlil stated, as quoted from a YouTube broadcast by KOMPASTV on Friday (18/09/2026).
Bahlil noted that energy subsidies are provided to assist those who have a legitimate right to them. He urged the wealthy not to encroach upon the rights of the groups targeted by government subsidies.
“I feel compelled to say this because I am a minister who has previously relied on subsidised rice. Therefore, please leave the rights to those who rightfully possess them. Do not let the wealthy take them,” Bahlil remarked.
In addition to discussing the accuracy of subsidy distribution, Bahlil also addressed the current state of national energy availability. He ensured that national fuel stocks are currently in a secure position, with reserves lasting approximately 18 to 20 days.
Bahlil noted that President Prabowo Subianto has issued directives to ensure that national energy security and availability are maintained amidst the current global geopolitical situation. The government is also preparing several strategies to reduce dependence on energy imports, one of which involves the development of biofuels. Following the implementation of the B50 programme, the government is now drafting steps for the development of E20 and E50. These programmes are aimed at increasing the use of energy based on domestic raw materials while simultaneously reducing reliance on diesel imports. In the upstream sector, the government also intends to encourage large-scale exploration of oil blocks and optimise ageing wells through technological support.
