Bahlil Says Electric Motorcycle Conversion Will Receive Government Incentives, How Much Will It Be Worth?
JAKARTA — Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has announced that the government will provide incentives for a programme converting petrol-powered motorcycles to electric motorcycles, following previous initiatives by the Ministry. However, he has not yet determined the target number of motorcycles for conversion or the value of subsidies to be provided under the scheme.
“Certainly the state will share responsibility with the people when converting from petrol to electric motorcycles. There will certainly be some form of sweetener,” Bahlil said when met at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources office in Jakarta on Monday, 9 March 2025.
According to Bahlil, conversion targets and the amount of incentives will be discussed at meetings of the Task Force for Accelerating Energy Transition.
“The task force has only just been formed. I will have task force meetings first, then I will report back,” Bahlil said.
The conversion of petrol-powered motorcycles to electric motorcycles, according to Bahlil, is one of the government’s strategies for reducing pollution whilst promoting energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Previously, Bahlil announced that the government had formed the Task Force for Accelerating Energy Transition to expedite implementation of several programmes, including converting conventional motorcycles to electric motorcycles.
He said the support scheme for the programme would still be discussed further by the newly formed task force to accelerate clean energy implementation.
The task force was established to accelerate the conversion of conventional motor vehicles, which number approximately 120 million motorcycles, to electric vehicles.
President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for the programme to be implemented maximally within three to four years, with expectations that it could be realised more quickly.
