Bahlil Reveals Causes of Java Power Outages to Prabowo
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia has revealed three main causes behind the recent power outages affecting several areas in Java. The disclosure was made after he met with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace complex in Central Jakarta on Monday, 22 June 2026.
“We also discussed the sustainability and stability of government services, particularly PLN’s electricity services to the public,” Bahlil told reporters at the Presidential Palace complex. “Together with the PLN President Director, we have dissected the matter and identified three issues.”
Firstly, Bahlil cited problems with gas-fired power plants (PLTG), though he did not elaborate further on the specific nature of the constraints. Secondly, the issue concerns the fulfilment of medium-calorie coal for blending purposes. Bahlil explained that PLN’s total annual coal consumption is 154 million tonnes, while the ministry’s assignment to companies to supply PLN has reached approximately 180 to 190 million tonnes. “Contractually, PLN has secured 134 million tonnes with suppliers for one year. By June, there should be no issue, but what PLN is complaining about is the medium-calorie coal for blending. We have ensured that there is no problem and the government has assisted PLN,” he clarified.
Thirdly, Bahlil urged PLN to promptly carry out maintenance on its power generation and transmission systems to ensure smooth service delivery to the public. “However, PLN informed me during the meeting that as of today, there will be no further disruptions,” he stated, adding that technical operations remain the responsibility of PLN while the government acts as the regulator.
