Bahlil: It is improper to separate Islamic boarding schools from the state
Sukabumi — Golkar Party Chairman Bahlil Lahadalia has spoken about the importance of Islamic boarding schools’ (pesantren) influence on the state and nationalism.
“Therefore, it is most improper if we separate pesantren and the state, because within pesantren we educate our children not only in religion and knowledge, technology, but also nationalism. And this exists in pesantren,” Bahlil stated.
He spoke during a Ramadan visit to Pondok Pesantren Azzainiyyah in Sukabumi, West Java, on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
“For us, pesantren hold a very significant role in Indonesia’s national journey. From pesantren have emerged religious scholars, community leaders and figures who have protected the nation’s moral values,” said Bahlil when met at Ponpes Azzainiyyah on Sunday evening.
He noted that pesantren continue to exist until today and remain instrumental in shaping the character of future national leaders.
“So do not think that pesantren are merely places for character building. Before our nation existed, whilst we were still under colonial rule, pesantren already existed to build the character of those who would later become national leaders,” he elaborated.
He cited examples such as the government’s Free Nutritious Meals Programme (MBG) and efforts to secure LPDP scholarships for pesantren students.
“This is part of the government’s endeavour under President Prabowo’s leadership, not only for public schools but also directed so that pesantren students can benefit from these initiatives,” Bahlil added.
