Bahlil Discusses Alternative Energy with Prabowo at the Palace
President Prabowo Subianto summoned Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia to the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday evening, 11 June 2026. Following the meeting, Bahlil stated that he and the Head of State discussed developments in the energy sector and downstreaming.
“We are observing the ongoing geopolitical developments. The President has ordered us to immediately seek alternative energy sources,” Bahlil told journalists at the Presidential Palace on Thursday night.
According to the Golkar Party Chairman, the government is focusing on accelerating the switch from liquified petroleum gas (LPG) to compressed natural gas (CNG). “Secondly, the organisation of mines, and thirdly, the readiness of the energy sector at PLN (State Electricity Company), as well as the availability of our fuel oil,” Bahlil said.
On a separate occasion, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Arif Havas Oegroseno stated that Indonesia is continuously optimising alternative oil sources on the African continent to address national energy volatility caused by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
“We are now cooperating extensively with Algeria, Nigeria, Angola; many African countries,” Havas said after a working meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives at the Parliament Building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday.
Havas explained that Indonesia’s current strategy is to secure oil supplies from regions that do not require passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently closed again due to tensions between the United States and Iran.
These criteria make Africa a suitable alternative as an energy source for Indonesia, he added. Besides Africa, Indonesia is also exploring oil import opportunities from oil and gas producing countries in Latin America.
“We are looking into many countries there that have oil and gas potential. Almost all countries in Latin America have this potential,” Havas concluded.
