Bahlil Denies Coal Scarcity Caused Power Outages in Several Regions
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, has confirmed that the power outages occurring in several regions were not caused by a scarcity of coal supply. He stated that the government has fulfilled its coal supply assignment for national electricity needs. “To say that the problem is coal scarcity is not true. Because our assignment has reached 170 million tonnes,” Bahlil told reporters at the Presidential Palace complex in Central Jakarta, quoted on Friday, 12 June 2026. Bahlil said the power outages in several areas were caused by trouble or problems with some machinery. The issue is currently being handled by PT PLN (Persero). “And indeed there are some troubles in several machines as conveyed by PLN. And we will resolve it as soon as possible,” he explained. Previously, PLN provided an explanation regarding the power outages lasting several hours yesterday in several regions of Indonesia. This occurred, including on Madura Island, not due to a scarcity of electricity supply. PLN Customer Service Unit (UP3) Manager for Madura, Fahmi Fahresi, stated that the outages occurring in several areas depend on local system conditions, operational needs, or technical work being carried out. “This happens because in operating the electricity system, PLN continuously makes measured operational adjustments and arrangements to maintain system reliability and ensure service quality for customers is preserved,” he said in a press statement delivered in Pamekasan, East Java, on Wednesday, 10 June 2026. It was previously reported that simultaneous power outages lasting for hours occurred on 9 June 2026 in areas such as Depok, Bogor, Gresik and parts of Madura Island, namely Pamekasan Regency. PLN is also continuously undertaking various efforts to anticipate the growth in electricity demand from year to year. According to Fahmi, these efforts are carried out through strengthening electricity infrastructure, maintaining and improving network reliability, optimising system operations, and intensive coordination with all units and related parties including local governments. “For the Madura region, PLN is also continuously strengthening the electricity system and carrying out network maintenance in a gradual and measured manner,” he said.
