Bahlil: B50 Implementation Slashes Oil Imports to 700 Barrels Per Day

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the implementation of the B50 biodiesel mandate will slash oil imports from around 1 million barrels per day to between 700,000 and 750,000 barrels per day. “By converting to B50, we are able to cut our imports by almost 250,000 to 300,000 barrels per day,” Bahlil said at the opening of the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit & Exhibition 2026 in Jakarta on Tuesday. Bahlil explained that Indonesia consumes 1.6 million barrels of fuel oil per day, while the country’s oil lifting is in the range of 600,000 to 615,000 barrels per day. Consequently, Indonesia’s average oil imports stand at around 1 million barrels per day to meet domestic needs. Bahlil noted that diesel fuel consumption in Indonesia is approximately 39 million kilolitres per year. By adopting B50, Indonesia reduces oil imports by roughly 250,000 to 300,000 barrels per day. “So now, total oil imports still stand at around 700,000 to 750,000 barrels per day, down from the 1 million barrel deficit,” Bahlil said. President Prabowo Subianto previously declared that Indonesia would begin halting diesel imports from July 2026, following the government’s success in developing palm oil-based B50 diesel fuel as part of efforts to strengthen national energy self-sufficiency.
