The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has addressed owners of luxury cars and wealthy groups who continue to consume subsidised fuel. He urged those with sufficient means to use their conscience and not take the fuel rights belonging to the less fortunate.

According to his observations, many individuals who previously used non-subsidised fuel have shifted to using subsidised fuel. He stated that although the government ensures national fuel reserves are in a safe position, Bahlil emphasised that the distribution of subsidies must be precisely targeted.

“Regarding the issue of shifting, from those who previously did not use subsidies and are now using them, my advice, as an Indonesian citizen to my brothers and sisters who are capable—and I apologise, those with BMWs and high-class cars—please, let us also use our hearts. Do not use subsidised fuel; that is for our fellow citizens who are entitled to receive it,” he said following the National Energy Council Plenary Session with President Prabert Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, as reported on Friday (18/09/2026).

Currently, Bahlil stated that national energy security is in a safe position. Measures to secure supply are being balanced with long-term strategies for developing environmentally friendly fuel, as well as driving massive exploration in new oil basins and blocks to strengthen national energy independence.

“I conveyed during the meeting that we also discussed and received direct instructions from the President that our fuel stock availability and national reserves are at 18 to 20 days. So, alhamdulillah, it is still clear,” he explained.

Regarding the plan to draft regulations to limit subsidised fuel for the wealthy, the rules are currently being prepared.

“I will consider it; we will see, but I must say this first because regulation requires a process. However, this appeal is important. For example, someone like me, would I use subsidised fuel? Subsidised fuel is for our brothers and sisters who are entitled to it. If you have a sufficient salary and a nice house, please use your conscience,” he remarked.

Bahlil admitted he was moved to give this open reprimand due to his personal background, having experienced difficult times and consumed subsidised rice in the past. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that government assistance facilities are not seized by those who are financially capable.

“I indeed have to say this, because I am a minister who has eaten subsidised rice. So, give the rights to the people who have the right to them; do not let the wealthy take them,” Bahlil concluded.
