Bahar bin Smith's Detention Suspended, Jakarta Metro Police Reveal the Reason

Jakarta Metro Police Public Relations Chief Sr. Comr. Budi Hermanto revealed that the reason for the suspension of detention of assault suspect Bahar bin Smith by the Tangerang City Metro Police was that he is currently in a recovery period.

“Detention was not carried out in consideration of the fact that suspect HBS is undergoing a medical recovery period due to an accident that occurred in December 2025,” said Budi in his statement.

He explained that the condition requires the individual to undergo outpatient treatment, and that the medical condition has been verified through Police medical services.

“So it is not an excuse, but rather a reason for the individual to undergo outpatient treatment,” he said.

However, the legal proceedings continue, and the case file will soon be sent to the Prosecutor’s Office for transfer.

It is known that the detention of assault suspect Bahar bin Smith was suspended by the Tangerang City Metro Police following a request from his legal counsel and an examination by investigators.

“After going through a lengthy examination process, Bahar bin Smith was granted a suspension of detention, meaning he was not detained and has returned home,” said Bahar bin Smith’s attorney, Ichwan Tuankotta.

He stated that the suspension request was submitted with several considerations. Among them, Bahar is the breadwinner of his family and has responsibilities as a teacher of Islamic boarding school students. Additionally, the family provided guarantees and ensured that Bahar would remain cooperative throughout the legal process.

“He will also be cooperative in undergoing the legal process. There are guarantees from the family,” he said.

Furthermore, Ichwan said, Bahar has also conveyed an apology to the victim and the GP Ansor organization through a video statement as a gesture of good faith. His legal team will also continue efforts to open communication with the victim to pursue resolution through a restorative justice mechanism.

“We will remain actively in contact with the victim and related parties to pursue restorative justice in accordance with the request we have submitted,” he said.
