Bahar bin Smith offers Rp272 million to settle, but victim demands Rp2 billion

TANGERANG, KOMPAS.com - The suspect in an assault, Bahar bin Smith, offered Rp 272.7 million to be paid to the victim during a restorative justice (RJ) mediation at the Tangerang City Metro Police on Thursday, 26 February 2026. However the victim’s side reportedly asked for Rp 2 billion. Bahar bin Smith’s lawyer, Ichwan Tuankotta, said that his client and the victim’s legal counsel Ridha agreed to settle by preparing Rp 272.7 million. “Previously, the victim through their attorney asked for Rp 272.7 million. But during the meeting the figure changed to Rp 2 billion,” he said when contacted by Kompas.com, Thursday, 5 March 2026. “Disclosed through the principal’s wife there are two demands to achieve RJ. One of which is a request for Rp 2 billion for restitution,” he added. He further stated that he even confirmed the amount again during the meeting, and was told again by the principal’s wife that it was Rp 2 billion. However, upon hearing the amount, he was shocked and felt that the victim’s demand was part of extortion. “At that moment I reacted with ‘extortion’,” he added. However, the victim’s family rejected the offer and said the legal process must proceed. Earlier, Bahar bin Smith was said to have offered cash and a motorcycle replacement to the victim’s family as a form of settlement. But the victim’s family refused that offer and insisted that the legal process must proceed. The victim’s wife, Fitri Yulita (40), said the offer was conveyed when Bahar visited their home on the night of Wednesday, 18 February 2026, coinciding with the first Tarawih of Ramadan.
