Baggage System at Malaysia Airport Experiences Error, Passengers Delayed for 4 Hours
A disruption in the baggage handling system at Terminal 1 of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) occurred again on Saturday (18/4/2026). This incident caused hundreds of passengers to wait for two to four hours to collect their belongings. Previously, a similar disruption happened in March 2026, shutting down the baggage system for more than an hour at Southeast Asia’s largest airport. Facebook user Kenc Low posted on the public Malaysia Airlines group page about the baggage disruption around 6:30 pm local time, claiming that the arrivals hall at Terminal 1 KLIA was very crowded with waiting times exceeding one hour. “I had dinner upon arriving at the lounge and when I came out, my suitcase was still nowhere to be seen,” Low wrote, as quoted by Channel News Asia on Monday (20/4/2026). Transport Minister Anthony Loke expressed regret over the incident, while warning that negligence at the nation’s main gateway will not be tolerated. Although the baggage system was restored that night, Loke emphasised that resolving the technical damage does not close the matter. Loke has instructed the secretary general of the Ministry of Transport to hold an emergency meeting with relevant agencies to conduct a thorough review of existing standard operating procedures (SOP), particularly regarding response times, passenger communication, and contingency planning, scheduled for today, Monday (20/4/2026). “MAHB, as the operator of KLIA, will be held accountable for this damage. A national gateway cannot tolerate repeated negligence like this,” he said.
