3M Scotchshield Ultra Safety & Security Film: Security and Architecture Solutions
Believe it or not, sharp fragments from shattered windows can travel at 30 meters per second and, therefore, can have a deadly impact on people inside buildings adjacent to the center of powerful bomb blasts, such as the one at Australian Embassy over year ago in Jakarta.
The image of glassless windows of the buildings around the embassy after the blast shows what a bomb blast can do to any building around the center of an explosion. This is due to the air blast loading that is forced into the buildings at high velocity.
While building owners have tightened security in their respective premises, they remain highly vulnerable not only from suicide bombers exploding themselves in roads adjacent to their buildings, but also from unpredictable powerful earthquakes.
Any unprotected or inadequately protected window glass will be transformed into sharp and deadly fragments in the event of bomb blasts or strong earthquakes. To protect their premises and tenants, building owners have to be extremely careful when selecting window glass.
Common sense says that if one can easily tear a glass film, then it will not be strong enough to grip fragments of broken window glass in the event of either bomb blast or earthquake.
Window Film Inventor
Scotchshield has its origins in 1960's UK, as a response to frequent bomb attacks by the IRA. To give adequate protection on window glass, 3M developed a patented window glass product. Over 40 years of ongoing development, 3M has been able to provide better security to its window glass products, particularly Scotchshield.
3M itself is the inventor of window glass film. Its window glass products have passed various tests by governments and private agencies in Australia and the UK. In all of those tests, 3M's products have been able to strongly grip glass fragments in explosions of various types, including TNT, pipe and Molotov bombs.
Scotchshield provides a solution to building owners as it is not only far safer than ordinary window glass film available on the market but also supports the building's aesthetic aspects as it is fully transparent.
Any window glass with Scotchshield on its surface will look as clear as its original color and, therefore, will not alter the building's appearance. These thin, pliable films are practically invisible, yet tough as nails. This characteristic has made Scotchshield very architecture-friendly.
Another strong point of Scotchshield is that all products are produced by 3M. Without outsourcing anything for Scotchshield production, 3M is able to assure the quality of all materials used as all of them are produced in-house.
Aside from the value-added aspects of 3M's Scotchshield, the product also offers effective ultra-violet (UV) protection. The Skin Cancer Foundation has awarded its "Seal of Recommendation" to many 3M window film products as effective ultra-violet (UV) protectants.
"The Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation Program was established to help the public choose safe and effective sun protection products," stated Perry Robins, president of the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Security Protection
Compared to other window glass films available on the market, 3M's Scotchshield Ultra Safety & Security Window Films (Scotchshield) have far stronger tear-resistance. While people are often impressed by the thickness of window glass films, actually thickness is no substitute for technology when it comes to safety.
Unlike some thick, inelastic and, therefore, easily torn, single layer window glass films offered in the market, Scotchshield's thinner window glass film uses multiple, micro- thin layer technology. This patented technology makes Scotchshield tougher, more durable, and more tear- and penetration-resistant than any other glass film product.
3M is fully confident in giving a warranty of 10 years for Scotchshield. Under this warranty, 3M guarantees that the product will maintain its strength, tear and penetration resistant properties. Also,0 the product will maintain adhesion properties without blistering, bubbling or delaminating from the glass.
That coverage, should a warranty claim arise, includes labor to remove existing film and labor and material to reinstall new film at no cost to the end-user. This clearly indicates the confidence of 3M.
This confidence also stems from the fact that 3M has the full support of its highly skilled and trained human resources. Having the needed know-how to apply Scotchshield on window glass, 3M's professional technicians and engineers are always ready to carry out their respective services for customers.
