The Chair of the Badung Regency Women’s Organisations Union (GOW), Mrs Yunita Alit Sucipta, has urged the elderly to remain active, healthy, and committed to lifelong learning amidst modern developments.

According to her, increasing age should not be an excuse to stop moving, sharing experiences, and providing benefits to the surrounding environment. “Age may increase, but the spirit to live, learn, share, and be useful knows no bounds. The elderly are not a group that must always be assisted, but rather a source of experience, wisdom, and affection, as well as an important part of the family and society,” she stated in a written release on Wednesday (30/09/2026).

Yunita, who is also an active member of the Badung Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), delivered these remarks as the keynote speaker during an inclusion activity for the ‘Empowered Elderly School’ organised by the Badung Aisyiyah Regional Leadership at the Gosana III Meeting Room, Badung DPRD Secretariat, on Sunday (2nd Sept).

The event was themed ‘Empowered, Healthy, and Wise Elderly in the Digital Era’. In her presentation, Yunita highlighted the importance of changing the perception that the elderly are a passive group that only requires assistance.

According to Yunita, the concept of ‘Empowered Elderly’ encompasses the ability to remain independent, active, and productive, while maintaining physical and mental health. This can be achieved through various simple activities, such as gardening, reading, and cooking.

In addition to maintaining health and staying active, Yunita encouraged the elderly to develop digital literacy skills. She noted that technological advancements make the ability to filter information essential, particularly when using social media.

“In today’s digital era, we must all remain proficient and wise in utilising social media, especially in filtering information to avoid fake news (hoaxes),” she added.

Meanwhile, the Committee Chair, Siti Khalifah, explained that the Empowered Elderly School programme is a direct instruction from the Central Social Health Council.

The event, which was also attended by the Chair of the Badung Aisyiyah Regional Leadership, Zachrolina, was designed as a tangible manifestation of the organisation’s care, ensuring that seniors in Badung Regency can continue to nurture their zest for life, serve as mentors to the younger generation, and remain meaningful amidst modern progress.
