Badung Transportation Agency Studies Traffic Engineering Scheme in Berawa-Canggu
The Badung Regency Transportation Agency (Dishub) plans to implement traffic engineering in the Berawa and Canggu tourist areas, North Kuta Subdistrict, Badung, Bali. This step is being taken in response to the high volume of vehicles and numerous public complaints regarding congestion at those points.
“We plan to move to the Canggu area, after Berawa then Canggu, because tourists are currently flocking there. Congestion is also occurring there, and complaints, including to the Regent’s contact, are plentiful,” said Acting Head of the Badung Transportation Agency, I Made Gede Wiryantara Adi Susandi, on Wednesday (15/4/2026).
This traffic flow engineering is planned to target crucial routes that have been congestion bottlenecks, including access to the beach and rat-run roads (shortcuts) in Berawa and Canggu. The Badung Dishub will soon invite the Road Traffic and Transportation Forum (LLAJ) to formulate the traffic engineering scheme.
“Berawa Beach and its surroundings, including in Canggu as well, Jalan Kayu Tulang and so on. We will review those areas,” Wiryantara explained.
According to Wiryantara, the main focus of this study is to improve travel smoothness for tourists and residents. He assessed that the development of tourism in the North Kuta area needs to be accompanied by stricter traffic management to avoid disrupting public comfort.
However, Wiryantara could not yet disclose the implementation timeline for the policy. He emphasised that studies and trials will be conducted before the traffic engineering is enforced.
On the other hand, the Badung Regency Government is also preparing a long-term strategy in the form of building new road infrastructure in North Kuta. This project is planned to connect several strategic points penetrating West Denpasar.
“Of course, it’s not out of the question because we are flexible; changes are certain, especially with plans for a through road from Banjar Semer to Kedampang. Then from Kedampang to Bali Kiddy, Teuku Umar Barat; adjustments will certainly be needed,” Wiryantara revealed.
This road development plan also includes new access that will connect the Batu Belig area to Umalas. The addition of these road sections is expected to reduce the vehicle load that has previously relied on existing main routes.
