Badung Regency Distributes 115,000 Rabies Vaccine Doses for 95,000 Dogs
The Badung Regency Government is intensifying door-to-door rabies vaccinations across all areas to prevent the spread of the virus. The programme prioritises tourist zones, targeting injections for approximately 95,000 dogs.
“Total 115,000 doses are ready to cover the entire region. This must be maximised to achieve high vaccination coverage and suppress the spread,” said the Head of the Animal Health Division of the Badung Agriculture and Food Service, I Gusti Ngurah Narendra Putra, on Wednesday (29/4/2026).
The vaccination implementation, scheduled for four months from April to July, involves collaboration between the Badung Regency Government and the Bali Provincial Government. Currently, field officers have injected more than 10,000 doses, with the initial focus on South Kuta, Kuta, and now expanding to Abiansemal.
“The main focus is on tourist areas because these regions are prioritised to avoid tarnishing the tourism image. However, all areas will be targeted gradually,” Narendra explained.
A proactive approach is being used to survey dog populations that are unevenly distributed in densely populated areas such as Mengwi and South Kuta. The government continues to provide emergency vaccination services until the end of the year if animal bite cases are found, even after the mass programme ends in July.
“We face the classic challenge of meeting targets amid time constraints and uneven terrain. The vaccines are provided free of charge, and anyone wishing to vaccinate can visit the department office,” he added.
This acceleration step is expected to provide peace of mind for the community while ensuring maximum protection for the entire dog population in Gumi Keris. The Badung Agriculture and Food Service urges public participation to ensure this year’s rabies control targets are not missed.
Bangli Requests 15,000 Rabies Vaccine Stock
The Bangli Regency Government hopes to receive a grant of 15,000 vaccine stocks for rabies-carrying animals (HPR) from the Bali Provincial Government. Efforts to request rabies vaccine stocks are aimed at achieving the annual 80% rabies vaccination target.
“Now we are still waiting to see if there will be additional provincial vaccines. Because for rabies control (in Bangli) we need vaccines,” said the Head of the Livestock and Animal Health Division of the Bangli Livestock and Food Security Service (PKP), Made Armana, when met by detikBali at his office on Wednesday.
Armana said the dog population in Bangli is recorded at 47,000. Ideally, the Bangli Regency Government should prepare 30,000 rabies vaccines per year for 80% of that dog population.
However, the current rabies vaccine stock owned by the Bangli Regency Government is only 15,000. Thus, half the amount of rabies vaccine stock is urgently needed in Bangli.
“The dog population here is 47,000. Ideally, 80% must be vaccinated (against rabies). But this year we could only purchase 15,000 vaccines,” Armana said.
Not only the number of vaccines, but other costs are also needed for vaccination operations and logistics. Armana said at least a total budget of around Rp 1 billion is required for ideal vaccination percentages.
That total budget was also used for HPR vaccinations in 2025. The required budget amount could change if there is an increase in the price of rabies vaccines.
“Because rabies vaccines are carried out routinely every year. This year, we are said to receive vaccines only, with no budget for operations,” he said.
