Badung regency is accelerating a flood-control drainage project in the Jalan Dewi Sri area of Kuta district and its surroundings. The work is being expedited ahead of the rainy season and is targeted for completion by the end of 2026.

“Progress is already at 70%,” said Anak Agung Rama Putra, head of the Water Resources Division at Badung’s Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR), on Monday (26 October 2026).

The drainage project, which began in June, covers Basangkasa as well as Jalan Dewi Sri, Jalan Pandawa and Jalan Campuhan. Flooding is caused in part by the area’s low-lying terrain, as well as sediment build-up in existing drains, which are narrow. Covered channels are now being widened to 1.5 metres.

“The area is indeed a basin, so even a little rain causes flooding, particularly on Jalan Campuhan, Jalan Dewi Sri 1 to 4, and in front of the Paragon Hotel. We are building a complete drainage system that will eventually lead to our pumps,” Rama Putra said.

Once the drainage improvements are complete, the area’s flood-control system will also rely on pumping equipment at Tukad Mati. Water from flood-prone points will be channelled into the main drains and towards the river, then pumped downstream to prevent it from overflowing into residential areas and onto roads.

“The lowest point is also around the pumps, and from there we will draw the water upstream. We are also rehabilitating the existing pumping equipment beside Tukad Mati to maximise water extraction,” Rama Putra added.

According to Rama Putra, the Rp50 billion project is intended to prevent a recurrence of the flooding in September 2025. He said the infrastructure upgrades are expected to provide a lasting solution to protect residential areas and tourist destinations during the rainy season.
