Badung Considers 400-Metre Underpass to Connect West Gatot Subroto to Canggu
The Badung Regency Government is refining plans to continue the West Gatot Subroto road extension. The route, which currently terminates in Kerobokan Kaja, North Kuta District, is to be connected through to the Canggu and Mengwi areas.
However, realising this infrastructure project is not without obstacles. Observations by detikBali on Tuesday (27/7/2026) found that the land west of the West Gatot Subroto route is vacant but directly borders residential areas. A considerable number of residents’ homes and temples stand in the Batu Culung Banjar area of Kerobokan Kaja.
The Badung Regency Government therefore faces the option of building an underpass or tunnel of around 400 metres. This is intended to pre-empt potential social conflicts arising from the acquisition of land, residents’ homes and places of worship.
“To avoid social access issues along West Gatot Subroto, where settlements are very dense, it is not impossible that we will build an underground road towards Canggu of about 400 metres in length,” declared the Regent of Badung, I Wayan Adi Arnawa.
The connecting infrastructure is estimated to cost a total of Rp 3.2 trillion. The largest share of the budget will be absorbed by the land acquisition process, which is expected to exceed Rp 2 trillion.
The 30-metre-wide road project linking Gatot Subroto, Canggu and Mengwitani is scheduled to enter the construction phase between 2027 and 2028. The new route is considered urgent to safeguard the future of tourism in Canggu and its surroundings from the threat of total gridlock.
“We are preparing it for execution in 2027 to 2028. If we do not address these congestion points soon, our tourism will be nothing but a memory,” said Adi Arnawa.
Meanwhile, work on the shortcut from Tibubeneng towards Canggu will also continue. The Badung Regency Government is currently processing land acquisition from the existing road westwards into the Padang Linjong area of Canggu Village. This route is planned to connect all the way to Mengwitani and Werdi Bhuwana.
This integrated approach is believed to be a long-term solution to untangling the vehicle congestion that frequently snakes through South Badung and the connecting routes to Denpasar. According to Adi, the formation of a new integrated road network is expected to distribute traffic more evenly whilst significantly cutting journey times.
