Backed by SoftBank and Others, OpenAI Secures Jumbo Funding of Rp 2.073 Trillion
OpenAI has closed its latest funding round with a valuation reaching US$852 billion, equivalent to approximately Rp13,500 trillion, marking one of the largest financings in the history of the global technology industry.
Citing CNBC.com on Wednesday (1/4/2026), in its official statement, OpenAI revealed that the total committed funds raised amount to US$122 billion or Rp 2.073 trillion (at an exchange rate of Rp 17,000), an increase from the US$110 billion announced in February. This round was led by SoftBank along with other major investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and D.E. Shaw Ventures.
The valuation surge aligns with the rapid business growth of OpenAI since launching ChatGPT in 2022, which sparked a global explosion in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption. As of March 2026, ChatGPT has been used by more than 900 million weekly active users, with over 50 million paid subscribers.
In terms of performance, OpenAI now generates around US$2 billion per month, with total revenue reaching US$13.1 billion throughout 2025. Nevertheless, the company is still in an aggressive expansion phase and has not yet recorded profits.
Previously, several strategic investors had already locked in major commitments, including Amazon up to US$50 billion, Nvidia at US$30 billion, and SoftBank at US$30 billion. The latest additional funds of around US$12 billion come from a broader group of investors, including participation through banking networks as well as approximately US$3 billion from individual investors.
OpenAI’s long-time partner, Microsoft, also participated in this funding, though it did not specify the value of its investment. By the end of last year, Microsoft had invested more than US$13 billion in OpenAI.
With the sharply rising valuation, CEO Sam Altman now faces pressure to prove the sustainability of the business model, especially amid plans toward an initial public offering (IPO). In recent months, the company has also begun adjusting its strategy by holding back some major expenditures and discontinuing certain products to control costs.
OpenAI emphasised that this jumbo funding will be used to strengthen global AI infrastructure. “The capital being poured in now will help build the infrastructure layer for intelligence itself, whose value will ultimately flow to the economy, companies, communities, and individuals,” the company wrote.
