Babysitter in Samarinda Arrested for Stealing Employer's Jewellery Worth Rp300 Million
A woman working as a babysitter has been arrested by Samarinda Kota Police in East Kalimantan for stealing jewellery worth Rp300 million from her employer. The suspect, identified by the initials AP alias Y, was taken into custody after an investigation into the theft from a housewife identified as F. The theft of gold and diamond jewellery was carried out in stages over a period of three months, from April to June 2026. Samarinda Kota Police Chief, Adjutant Commissioner Amiruddin, explained that the case came to light following a report from the victim on 8 July 2026. The victim reported the loss of several pieces of jewellery stored in her home in the Sambutan sub-district, Samarinda. After receiving the report, the operational team immediately launched an investigation. Officers suspected the involvement of an insider because no signs of forced entry were found at the house. Suspicion fell on AP, who had been working at the victim’s home for three years. The suspect was detained while still at the victim’s house and during interrogation admitted to taking three gold rings, two gold necklaces, and one white gold diamond bracelet belonging to her employer. According to police, the suspect used a fairly neat method to cover her tracks. The stolen jewellery was sold through an intermediary outside East Kalimantan province using an expedition service. The suspect contacted a relative outside the region to find a buyer, then sent the goods via expedition. The proceeds from the sales were received through a digital wallet application transfer and cashed out in Samarinda. The money was used for personal needs and sent to her hometown. Police stated the thefts were committed when the victim was off guard or when the house was empty, including when the victim was travelling out of town. During the arrest, police seized several pieces of evidence, including three gold purchase receipts, a mobile phone used for transactions, and cash amounting to Rp4.5 million. Although the victim’s total loss reached Rp300 million, preliminary investigations indicate the suspect only received around Rp80 million from the sales. The police are continuing to develop the case to uncover other suspected accomplices, including those who helped sell the items and the buyers of the stolen goods. AP is currently being detained at the Samarinda Kota Police station and has been charged under Article 476 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment or a category five fine. Police have urged the public to be more vigilant in storing valuables at home and to report any indications of criminal activity in their neighbourhoods immediately.
