Baby dies in closet

CIREBON, West Java: Investigations are underway into the death of a newborn baby girl who was allegedly murdered by her mother in Kebon Panggung, Pekalangan district.

Antara reported on Monday that the mother, identified only as HL, had been pregnant out of wedlock and was terrified that her relatives would discover the pregnancy.

After she gave birth alone in the bathroom of her house, the 23-year-old mother is believed to have wrapped her baby in a cloth and suffocated her by placing her inside a closet.

Suspicions about the murder were first raised by Asia, 33, HL's sister, who knew of the pregnancy.

After HL refused to answer her questions, Asia then searched the house and finally discovered the baby inside the closet.

Police buried the baby, which had been posthumously named Febriyanti, in a nearby public cemetery. They are now awaiting the autopsy report on the dead baby before questioning HL.
