'Baby Apec' dies in the hospital
THAILAND: A baby boy abandoned in a Bangkok trash can and nicknamed "Apec" died in the hospital on Wednesday after nine short days of life, hospital officials said a day following the summit after which he was named.
The 3.2 kg (seven pound) baby, named after the two-day Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in Bangkok, died after his heart stopped beating due to complications from oxygen deprivation.
The baby's 23-year-old mother, who was arrested by police on Sunday and faces a murder charge, was allowed to visit her child an hour before his death.
"She cried when she saw him," said Taydee Rukvanith, supervising nurse at the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, where "Baby Apec" had been attached to a respirator with tiny strips of white tape. -- Reuters

Shot Cambodian pop star evacuated
CAMBODIA: A Cambodian pop star with links to the royalist FUNCINPEC party was medically evacuated to a Bangkok hospital on Wednesday as thousands of grieving fans prayed she survived gun shot wounds to the face.
The 24-year-old siren Touch Sunnich, known across Cambodia as the voice of FUNCINPEC, was evacuated under tight security with members of her family, said Prime Minister Hun Sen's advisor, Om Yentieng.
Police said four men on motorbikes opened fire on the singer and her mother on Tuesday as they were getting into a car after leaving a flower shop. Touch Sunnich was shot in the head; her 62-year-old mother, Kim Sinon, was shot in the back and died.
Prime Minister Hun Sen offered a reward on Wednesday for information leading to the capture of the attackers of the singer.
Hoping to prevent the shooting of Touch Sunnich from snowballing into a major source of instability, Hun Sen ordered all armed forces to boost security and suggested that political forces were behind the crime. -- Agencies

Bombs explode in Laos, 2 die
VIETNAM: Two people were killed in a bomb blast in southern Laos, while a hand grenade was thrown near a market in Vientiane on the same day, Radio Free Asia (RFA) and state media said on Wednesday.
The first blast took place on Sunday afternoon at the Souvantxay market in Khanthabouly town, in southern Savannakhet province, killing two people and injuring at least five others, RFA said, citing local sources.
The second blast took place later on the same day near Vientiane's Khoua Din evening market after a grenade was hurled by two men on a motorbike, the U.S. government-funded network said.
Tuesday's edition of the state-run Vientiane Times acknowledged the incident had taken place, but blamed it on a personal dispute, saying "two gangs were arguing with each other when one gang member took the grenade and exploded it". -- AFP
