Baby Abandoned in Empty Shop in Sunter, Perpetrator Arrested

A newborn baby was abandoned in an empty shop in the Pasar Bambu Kuning area, Sunter Agung, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta. Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the case.

“The perpetrator has been detained and we have handed the case over to the North Jakarta Metro Police’s Women and Children Protection Unit,” said Tanjung Priok Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head AKP Handam Samudro, as reported by Antara on Friday (24/7/2026).

The suspect is currently being questioned at the North Jakarta Metro Police. Details regarding the suspect’s identity and the motive for abandoning the baby have not yet been disclosed.

The suspect was arrested on Thursday (23/7). The baby was found by residents on Tuesday (21/7).

The baby was discovered after residents heard crying coming from inside the empty shop. When found, the baby boy was wrapped in a white cloth and lying on the shop floor.

“The witness initially became suspicious after hearing the sound of a baby crying from inside the empty shop,” he added.

The curious witness, along with other residents, entered the shop to search for the source of the sound. It was then that they found the baby, who was still alive.

“They found the baby still alive, lying on the floor inside the shop, estimated to be just two or three days old,” he continued.

The discovery was subsequently reported to the police. Officers immediately went to the scene and secured the baby.

“We managed to make the arrest after conducting a series of investigations, including questioning several witnesses,” he concluded.
