Babel Police Chief Vows to Follow Up President's Directive on Illegal Mining

The Bangka Belitung Regional Police (Polda Babel) has affirmed its commitment to following up on President Prabowo Subianto’s instructions regarding the eradication of illegal mining and tin smuggling in the province. Police Chief Inspector General Viktor Sihombing stated that his force would not hesitate to take action against any offenders, including any rogue officers who dare to back these illegal activities. Responding to the President’s sharp focus on the prevalence of illegal mining, the Chief of Police described the directive as an order that must be implemented on the ground. “The President’s instruction is an order for us. So, how we maintain what is already good, while also serving as a warning to preserve the good things,” Viktor said on Friday (14/8). He added that law enforcement efforts against illegal mines in Bangka Belitung have been and will continue to be carried out consistently. “Indeed, further efforts are still needed, including law enforcement. Recently, we have also carried out enforcement actions. And we will continue to do so,” he said. Beyond law enforcement, the two-star police general stressed the importance of legal mining governance so that the benefits can be directly felt by the community. Polda Babel has pledged to oversee the local government’s plans regarding People’s Mining Permits (IPR). “The most important thing is that the mines must also be utilised by the community. So, regarding the IPR plan that will be implemented by the local government, I will later instruct the district police chiefs to oversee it, so that the community can feel the benefits,” Viktor explained. Regarding the crackdown on law enforcement officers suspected of backing illegal mining or smuggling routes, the former Police Human Resources Division Head affirmed a strict, zero-tolerance stance. “Yes, everyone, whoever it is. We never turn a blind eye or be selective. Whoever the perpetrator is, we will take action,” he said. Bangka Regent Fery Insani welcomed the President’s instructions regarding illegal mining practices. “Not just illegal mining, what the President conveyed in his speech was very good, and we in the regions will implement it,” said the Regent. President Prabowo Subianto had previously ordered a total clean-up of illegal mining practices, firm action against involved law enforcement officers, and the eradication of tin smuggling in Bangka Belitung. The President delivered this message during his State Address commemorating the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia at the Nusantara Building, Parliamentary Complex, Jakarta, on Friday, 14 August 2026. In front of members of the People’s Consultative Assembly, the House of Representatives, the Regional Representatives Council, and leaders of high state institutions, the President highlighted the rampant existence of around 1,000 illegal mines in various regions. The Head of State questioned the oversight function and asked the Indonesian Military Commander and the National Police Chief to take firm action against officers involved in or allowing these illicit practices. The President also emphasised the importance of courageous leadership in enforcing internal discipline.
