Ba'asyir's detention extended

JAKARTA: The Jakarta Prosecutors Office has extended by 30
days the detention of Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, the head of the
Indonesian Mujahidin Council, who is detained for treason,
including a plot to kill then vice president Megawati
Soekarnoputri in 2000.

Jakarta Prosecutors Office Head Muljohardjo said Tuesday that
the extension would take effect when the first detention period
of 20 days ended today (Wednesday).

Police investigators submitted Ba'asyir's case files to the
prosecutors office on Feb. 28.

Ba'asyir is charged with attempts to stage a coup d'etat and
violation of immigration laws.

Prosecutor have proposed holding Ba'asyir's trial at the
Central Jakarta Court. The office has submitted the proposal to
the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.

Ba'asyir has sued the Jakarta Prosecutors Office over his
detention. His case is being heard at the South Jakarta District
