B50 Implementation Hailed as Milestone for National Bioenergy Ecosystem

The Chair of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Bambang Patijaya, has praised the government’s move, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), to officially implement the B50 biodiesel mandate starting 1 July 2026. He described the policy as a significant milestone in strengthening the national bioenergy ecosystem, accelerating the downstream processing of natural resources, and reinforcing Indonesia’s energy security. Bambang assessed that the implementation of B50 demonstrates the government’s consistency, under the leadership of Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, in executing the energy self-sufficiency agenda championed by President Prabowo Subianto. Amidst geopolitical dynamics and global energy price fluctuations, utilising domestically sourced energy is deemed the right strategy to bolster national energy independence. According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the B50 implementation is projected to increase the national biodiesel requirement to approximately 17.6 million kilolitres in 2026, potentially saving the country around Rp157 trillion in foreign exchange through reduced diesel imports. Beyond the fiscal benefits, the policy also strengthens the utilisation of palm oil as a high-value-added energy feedstock. “The B50 programme is not merely about increasing the biodiesel blend percentage; it serves as the foundation for establishing an integrated national bioenergy ecosystem from upstream to downstream. This kind of policy certainty will send a positive signal to the business world to continue investing in the development of the national bioenergy industry,” Bambang stated in a written release on Wednesday, 1 July 2026. He added that the B50 implementation is expected to spur investment growth in the biodiesel processing sector, strengthen distribution infrastructure, advance technology development, and increase the capacity of supporting industries. Consequently, the policy’s benefits will not only be felt in the energy sector but will also reinforce the national industrial structure and enhance Indonesia’s competitiveness. Bambang also commended the government’s readiness, noting that technical testing of B50 was conducted on various modes of transportation, heavy equipment, railways, and industrial sectors prior to the nationwide rollout. He believes this testing-based approach indicates that the government prioritises safety, quality, and reliability in policy implementation. As Chair of Commission XII, Bambang affirmed that the House will continue its oversight function to ensure the B50 implementation proceeds according to target, covering aspects from raw material supply readiness and biodiesel quality to distribution effectiveness and policy sustainability. This oversight is considered essential so that the programme’s benefits can be optimally felt by the public, the business sector, and the national economy.
