B50 Era: From energy security to Indonesia's new position on the world stage
Starting 1 July 2026, Indonesia enters a new phase in national energy policy through the implementation of B50 biodiesel, a blend of 50 percent palm oil-based biodiesel and 50 percent fossil diesel. With the government’s confirmation for 1 July, Indonesia becomes one of the countries with the highest biodiesel blending mandate in the world, following the end of the B40 implementation period which began in 2025. The government has undertaken thorough preparations through various feasibility trials of B50 on different types of vehicles and heavy equipment. As a result, the government is confident and has decided to increase the biodiesel blend level to 50 percent for a more environmentally friendly driving experience and as part of efforts to strengthen national energy security. This programme carries significant economic impact. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) estimates that B50 implementation could save the country foreign exchange of up to Rp157.28 trillion, equivalent to approximately 9.18 billion US dollars, in 2026. The savings stem from reduced imports of fuel oil, particularly diesel. ESDM Ministry Spokesperson Dwi Anggia acknowledged during a press conference on the acceleration of strategic government programmes in Jakarta on Wednesday (17/6) that in 2026, with B50 implementation, Indonesia could save Rp157.28 trillion in foreign exchange. The use of B50 biodiesel is believed to cut fossil-based diesel consumption by up to 4 million kilolitres per year, thereby reducing pressure on the trade balance. Consequently, Indonesia’s dependence on foreign energy supplies can be curbed amidst global oil price uncertainty and geopolitical dynamics. The utilisation of Indonesia’s natural resources through B50 biodiesel technology is drawing global attention. While several countries still implement biodiesel blends at B10 to B20 levels, Indonesia is leaping to B50. Even neighbouring Malaysia currently maintains a B15 biodiesel mandate. This situation makes Indonesia one of the pioneers in large-scale palm oil-based biodiesel use. For the national palm oil industry, the B50 policy is expected to increase domestic absorption of crude palm oil (CPO). Indonesia is the world’s largest palm oil producer, with production exceeding 46 million tonnes per year. The increased demand for biodiesel feedstock could provide a larger market for the national palm oil industry while reducing reliance on exports.
