Baku, Azerbaijan – Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said Iran has pledged to thoroughly investigate the incident involving a drone attack in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

“Iran has promised to thoroughly investigate yesterday’s UAV attack in Nakhchivan,” Bayramov said at a joint press conference in Baku with Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi on Friday.

“Diplomatic steps have been taken in response to the incident, and a protest note has been sent [to Tehran], accompanied by a telephone call to my Iranian counterpart,” he added.

“The Iranian investigation is part of the overall process. Azerbaijan’s security is under the close control of the head of state,” he added.

On Thursday, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said the drone attack had been carried out from Iranian territory into the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, injuring four people.

Following the attack, President Ilham Aliyev said at a security council meeting that the armed forces, the state border service, and a unit of special forces had been placed on high alert.

On 28 February 2026, the United States and Israel launched a series of strikes against several targets inside Iran, including Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties.

Iranian state television confirmed the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a result of the attack.

Iran then responded to the military aggression by launching missiles into Israeli territory and at US military facilities in the Middle East.
