Ayatollah Khamenei to Be Buried on 9 July
Former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike on 28 February, will be buried on 9 July. Citing AFP, Iranian state television reported that the late Khamenei will be interred in his birthplace, the holy city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran. The burial will follow a three-day funeral procession in the capital Tehran beginning on 4 July, and in the holy city of Qom on 7 July. The funeral was originally scheduled for March but was postponed due to the war. Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, succeeded him as Supreme Leader in early March. He becomes the third Supreme Leader since the Islamic Republic was founded in 1979. Mojtaba Khamenei, who was wounded in the US-Israeli strike that killed his father and several other Iranian officials, has not appeared in public since his appointment.
