AWG welcomes US-Iran ceasefire, calls for global oversight

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The humanitarian organisation Aqsa Working Group (AWG) has welcomed the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, hoping that this step can become permanent. “May it become a permanent ceasefire so that regional and even global stability is created, especially as the Muslim ummah will enter the Hajj season,” said AWG Presidium Chairman M. Anshorullah in Jakarta on Friday (10/4). AWG also appreciated Pakistan’s role as a mediator that encouraged both parties to agree on the ceasefire and hold a meeting in Islamabad. According to AWG, the agreement needs to be monitored by the international community to ensure it is implemented by all parties. “Therefore, the UN and countries around the world must truly ensure that this agreement is adhered to by all parties, especially Zionist Israel,” he said. AWG also highlighted the situation in Gaza, which it assessed as still marked by violence despite the ceasefire. In addition, AWG appreciated Iran’s stance and noted that international support for the country is increasing. AWG also criticised Israel’s policies in the Middle East region, which it deemed to be worsening the situation. “Their colonial existence in Palestine, manifested in apartheid and racist politics, is an anomaly to the goals of global justice and peace. They are enemies of humanity that must be eradicated immediately,” he said. In a separate statement, AWG also condemned Israel’s airstrikes on Lebanon at the beginning of the ceasefire period. “This is a genocidal crime like what they have done in Gaza. Zionist Israel must be tried and brought to the International Court,” the organisation stated.
