Awaiting Resolution: DKI Jakarta Provincial Government Tackles Padel Court Noise Controversy
Padel courts in several residential areas of Jakarta have sparked controversy after residents complained about noise pollution. One of the complaints emerged from the Haji Nawi area in Cilandak, South Jakarta.
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is now conducting oversight and evaluation of padel court operations. A number of measures are being prepared, ranging from operational restrictions to potential sanctions against operators who violate regulations.
Noise complaints were lodged by residents living near a padel court in the Haji Nawi area. A resident named Naufal (27) said he had repeatedly reported the issue.
“I submitted one report in November, one in December, and in January and February I was filing three reports a week through JAKI. Because of the numerous reports we had made, we even met with the management on 31 January, but the mediation produced no results,” Naufal said when met at his residence on Thursday (19/2).
He said the noise could be heard from morning until night. Residents hoped their neighbourhood would return to its former tranquillity.
“I just want the previous calm atmosphere in our home to return to the way it was — without hearing the screaming of people playing padel and the sound of racquets hitting balls,” he said.
Operator Promises Sound Insulation and Operational Limits
In response to the complaints, the court operator stated it would undertake a number of improvements. Fajar Ediputra, a representative of PT Kreasi Arena Indonesia, said operations had already been curtailed.
“We have limited our operating hours during the fasting month, reducing operations by approximately 50 per cent. This is also intended to show greater respect for our neighbours,” Fajar told reporters on Thursday (19/2/2026).
In addition, the operator committed to installing sound insulation. Residents were also informed that court operations would be temporarily suspended during Ramadan to support the installation process.
“We will reinforce our walls so that the sounds produced from the padel court can be contained inside and do not disturb anything outside,” he explained.
DKI Jakarta Provincial Government Prepares Firm Action
DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated he had instructed the relevant agencies to conduct oversight of the padel courts that had drawn complaints from residents.
“I have specifically asked the relevant agencies to carry out field inspections regarding this padel issue,” Pramono told reporters at Semanggi Park, South Jakarta, on Friday (20/2/2026).
He stressed that decisions regarding padel court operations would be taken imminently.
“On Monday or Tuesday we will promptly decide on padel courts that disturb public order, that have not obtained the consent of local residents, and whose permits are incomplete. The DKI Jakarta government will take firm action,” he said.
Permit Evaluation and Potential Licence Revocation
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is also conducting a comprehensive evaluation of padel courts, particularly those located near residential areas.
“Regarding noise complaints from padel courts, Governor Pramono Anung has stated that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is carrying out a thorough evaluation of the permits and operations of all padel courts in the DKI Jakarta region, especially those situated close to residential areas,” said the Governor’s Special Staff member Chico Hakim to reporters on Sunday (22/2/2026).
The provincial government has left open the possibility of imposing strict sanctions, stating that if operations are found to be non-compliant with permits, licences could be revoked.
“The Governor has affirmed that padel courts proven to be disturbing public order, operating outside the scope of their permits, or lacking consent from surrounding residents will be dealt with firmly, including the possibility of operational restrictions up to licence revocation if necessary,” he said.
The provincial government is targeting the swift completion of the evaluation process. The results are expected to form the basis for resolving the controversy whilst ensuring sporting activities remain mindful of the comfort of the surrounding community.
