Avoid eviction by force
Avoid eviction by force
From Pikiran Rakyat
Tanjung Duren, an area near the luxury apartments of Taman
Anggrek in West Jakarta, was formerly a vast expanse of
uninhabited land. The Jakarta regional administration allowed the
land to be cultivated, but later unknown parties built and sold
houses to locals.
Now with projects planned for the land, the settlers are being
forcefully evicted from their houses, which is no solution at
all. The authorities should have driven off those who first built
the houses illegally and duped innocent people into buying them.
In fact, the government should act as a mediator between the
occupants and the legitimate land owners. It should also pay
compensation to the evictees because of its negligence in
allowing the sale of the illegal houses. The unlawful settlement
builders must also be investigated and substitute land provided
for the evictees.
