Avoid Cult of Personality to Prevent Crimes Disguised as Religion
Addressing the proliferation of sexual abuse cases by individuals claiming to be religious figures or teachers, PP Persis General Chairman KH Jeje Zaenudin has called for the importance of Muslims avoiding dogmatic-mystical patterns of religiosity. He stressed that uncontrolled cult of personality only opens the door for unscrupulous individuals to misuse spiritual authority for personal interests that violate sharia. Kiai Jeje stated that as PP Persis Chairman, he conveyed deep condolences and concern, as these incidents not only severely harm the image of religious leaders and institutions but also inflict profound traumatic wounds on the victims. “We strongly condemn all forms of sexual abuse, exploitation, and immoral acts committed by individuals claiming or regarded as religious figures, teachers, or spiritual leaders,” Kiai Jeje told Republika on Thursday (7/5/2026). Kiai Jeje said such actions constitute grave sins, betrayals of scholarly trust, and destructions of the image of ulama and Islamic educational institutions. The perpetrators are outliers who must not be considered representatives of any religion or Islamic institution. “Islam is a religion of nobility and honour. There is no place for perpetrators of sexual crimes who exploit religious symbols, positions, or authority,” Kiai Jeje declared. This PP Persis Chairman emphasised that there is no immunity or sanctity for anyone. Every Muslim, including ustadz, kyai, and spiritual leaders, must submit to sharia, noble morals, and state law. Therefore, PP Persis demands strict, transparent enforcement of the law without favouritism against the perpetrators, rejecting all forms of defence in the name of pesantren or majelis dignity, forced peaceful settlements, or customs that harm victims.
