Autonomy a disaster?
Autonomy a disaster?
From Neraca
Recently, worries about the implementation of regional autonomy have been either boldly spoken or timidly voiced. Some are concerned about matters pertaining to indigenous people, while others wonder about the sharing of natural resources.
I believe, however, that all these worries are groundless. Regional autonomy is meant to ensure that all Indonesian people across the archipelago -- not only in Jakarta -- can enjoy the equitable distribution of prosperity.
Compared with a federal state, an autonomous region has less clear boundaries. Regional autonomy may be wide-ranging or limited depending on how it is regulated.
Regional autonomy is a way to minimize the authority of the central government. The hurdles are only part of the process we must go through to reach our ultimate goal.
