Authorities to deport six foreigners soon

JAKARTA (JP): Immigration authorities will soon deport six
foreigners, all of whom female, who were arrested in an operation
against illegal aliens in West Jakarta over the weekend.

"The five Filipinas and the Chinese were found guilty of
abusing their visas and we'll therefore deport them soon and
inform their respective embassies," Immigration Spokesman Haryo
Subayu told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

The five Filipinos were identified as Rosalia Ragasa, Maria
Charito Magtongob, Miralyn Yandog, Alma Nantes and Ailen Gaspang
while the Chinese national is Zhang Lia, Subayu said.

All of them were apprehended on Friday morning in a rented
room of a house on Jl. Hayam Wuruk 101 D by a team of officials
from the Directorate General of Immigration, following tips from
the public about their illegal work here, said Subayu.

Without having legal documents, such as work permits, the six
foreign women worked as hostesses in the karaoke rooms at the
nearby King Town entertainment center.

According to Subayu, the Filipinas entered the country on
short-visit visas, while the Chinese woman came in on a social-
cultural visa.

The operators of the King Town center have already confirmed
their status at the entertainment place, Subayu said.

"For now the six women are being detained in immigration
quarantine in Kalideres, West Jakarta," said Subayu.

The spokesman, however, gave no information about the owner of
the house who had earlier prohibited the Immigration officers
from entering the house.

Immigration regulations require that all visiting foreigners
carry their passport with them wherever they go. Those who reside
in Indonesia need only bring their KIM-S, or their temporary stay
permit card, with them. Those who work here have to also own a
working permit.

One of the illegal foreigners, Ailen Gaspang, told reporters
after the arrest that she had been going to look for work at the
Long Beach restaurant in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, when a friend of
hers asked her to work at the King Town entertainment center with
a monthly salary of around US$400.

"I never intended to work here," said Gaspang, who arrived
here in January.

According to Subayu, there are large numbers of illegal aliens
living in the downtown area, which is also known as the home of
hundreds of camouflaged prostitution places.

"We plan to hunt down more illegal foreigners," he said.

Data at the directorate general of immigration shows that a
total of 38 foreigners have been deported this year so far.

The office deported 195 foreigners last year, compared to 144
in 1994 and 277 in 1993. (bsr)
