Authoritarian teachers under fire

PALANGKARAYA, Central Kalimantan: Hundreds of students at the
Palangkaraya University demonstrated Saturday to demand that the
college management take action against numerous teachers who are
"authoritarian".

The demonstrators, led by student senate chairman Ahmad Yani,
also demanded that "lazy" teachers, who come to campus only to
sell handouts, be punished as well, Antara reported.

The students charged that many lecturers, especially at the
school of economics, don't even have seats in the their offices
because they are too busy moonlighting.

In a talk with the leaders of the most prestigious university
in Central Kalimantan, the students expressed their dismay at the
slack discipline of their teachers.

"They sell each handout for Rp 25,000 (US$11). Students who
dare to refuse cannot hope to pass their exams," one protester
maintained. (pan)
