Australian PM Urges US and China to Agree on Cooperation to Control AI

We must ensure that humans remain in control.

Islamabad (ANTARA) - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has urged the United States and China—the two leading nations in the development of artificial intelligence (AI)—to reach an agreement to control the technology.

Albanese made the call while visiting the headquarters of tech giant Apple in Cupertino, California, during his journey to New York to attend the UN General Assembly next week.

He urged Washington and Beijing to work together to form an international agreement similar to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, signed in 1970, which aimed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.

“The fact is, they are the two main giants in this field, so we want to see cooperation,” Albanese said on Sunday.

The Australian PM stated that he would utilise the momentum of the UN General Assembly to discuss with world leaders the need to formulate global rules capable of balancing the rapid development of AI.

Describing AI as a “global phenomenon,” Albanese emphasised that remaining silent or merely being a spectator is not an option.

“Discussions regarding a global framework for the application of AI are necessary because its development is very rapid, and we must ensure that humans remain in control,” he said.

New debates regarding AI governance have emerged after Anthropic leader Dario Amodei called for a coordinated slowdown of AI. This move has been supported by OpenAI’s Sam Altman and SpaceX’s Elon Musk.

However, US President Donald Trump has rejected the call, arguing that a slowdown would only provide an advantage to China, which he considers the US’s greatest competitor.

Ahead of a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House, Trump reaffirmed his position by announcing the formation of an “AI Force” task force to protect US industry from attempts at obstruction or destruction caused by AI.
